Discipleship, leadership & missional living

Dr. Ed Newton has served as Lead Pastor of Community Bible Church (CBC) in San Antonio, Texas, since January 2016. Faithful to the call God placed on his life, Ed has watched the Holy Spirit grow CBC into a 45,000-member multigenerational, multicultural congregation of disciple-makers committed to being the good news of Jesus to every person in every place.

Ed's journey to ministry didn't begin in a church pew. It began in the middle of a hard season. It was during his high school years, amid real adversity and personal hardship, that Ed encountered Christ in a way that changed the trajectory of his life. That radical salvation experience never left him. It's what drives his conviction that no one is too far gone, too broken, or too lost to be found. Like the shepherd in Luke 15 who leaves the ninety-nine to go after the one, Ed believes the Church exists to go after, with grace and purpose, the people who feel farthest from home.

By his senior year of high school, Ed sensed a clear call to ministry. He pursued that call with everything he had, earning a Bachelor of Science in Church Ministries from Clearwater Christian College, a Master's in Religious Education from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master's in Divinity, and a Doctorate of Ministry in Pulpit Communication from Trinity Theological Seminary. His passion for the Word has always been inseparable from his passion for people.

Today, Ed's ministry centers on evangelism, preaching, and discipleship, with a particular heart for students and the next generation. He leads CBC from a posture of radical generosity, giving freely, loving boldly, and going after the one as a way of life, not just an agenda. What happens on Sunday is just the beginning. More than anything, it is Ed’s heart that people walk out different than they walked in, equipped to carry Jesus into every corner of their lives.

That mission starts at home. Ed is the husband of his college sweetheart, Stephanie, who is part of the teaching team at CBC, and the father of three adult daughters and one son who is part of the student ministry at CBC.
