Relationship Over Requests
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” - James 4:8
For many people, prayer becomes a list. Needs to present. Problems to fix. Fears to unload. There is nothing wrong with bringing your requests to God. He invites you to do that. But if prayer becomes only that, you end up missing the very heart of what God designed it to be. Prayer was never meant to be a formula you follow. It was meant to be a relationship you live in.
Think about any close relationship in your life. If every conversation were filled with nothing but requests, that relationship would feel shallow. You would never really know each other. You would never hear the deeper thoughts or the emotions beneath the surface. Something valuable would be lost. The same thing happens when we approach God only with a list. We talk to Him, but we do not truly draw near to Him.
What God desires most in prayer is your heart. He wants you to know Him as a Father, not just a provider. He wants your trust, not just your petitions. He wants your honesty, not just your words. When you slow down and focus on Him instead of your needs, prayer shifts. Peace comes easier. Worship rises naturally. Your worries become lighter because your attention is no longer stuck on the problem. It is fixed on His presence.
There is a reason Jesus often slipped away from the crowds to pray. He was not running through a routine. He was spending time with the Father. He modeled the kind of relationship that prayer is meant to build. A place of rest. A place of strength. A place where your soul is reminded that God is near and God is good.
Maybe your prayer life has felt dry or routine lately. Maybe it feels more like a task than a connection. You can change that today. Instead of rushing through requests, begin by simply drawing near. Thank Him for who He is. Sit quietly before Him. Let Scripture stir your affection. Talk to Him like someone who knows you fully and loves you completely.
Your needs matter to God, but your heart matters even more. When prayer becomes less about asking and more about knowing Him, everything else begins to fall into place. Prayer becomes a relationship, not a ritual. And in that place, you discover the peace and closeness your heart has been longing for.

Thank you sir. Jonathan McReynolds L.R.F. F. I make room for what’s important to me. I choose my priorities. Jesus you are my number sounds great but the truth is I’m my number one and He gets second s lot of the time. He takes reel good care of me but no excuses. I’m spoiled. So grateful for tools like this to keep me connected to Him.
Great word Pastor! I have never made God #1, and as you shared, prayer becomes almost militant instead of personal, affectionate. God loves us, He knows us, every fine detail, He created us to have fellowship with Him! Again thank you for this word, it came at the right time, here in the beginning of 2026!
nGod bless you and yours Pastor Ed
What an amazing Truth for all of us!
Thankful for that message today and the Old Testament my Mom always quoted to me. She passed away when I was in my teens but left me knowing that the Law was not sin and is holy. This has grown me in prayer and repentance. I didn't figure out God's grace and mercy until later in life.
nAs long as I got King Jesus I'm good and have no problem letting folks know about how the Lord can change their lives. ??
Paster ED this hit the spot. I try and pray and thank Jesus before I get up in the morning. I love to call his name. I am always talking and thinking him. Paster ED keep it coming you are great in my eyes as giving us the word every morning. Much Love To You And The Family.
Every day he is my father and I need him
