Wisdom In Relationships

"Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” - Proverbs 13:20

The people we choose to spend time with will either make us wiser or lead us astray. Choose your companions carefully.

We become like the people we spend time with. This is not just a nice saying; it is a biblical principle with real consequences. If we surround ourselves with people who make poor decisions, we will find ourselves making similar choices. But if we walk with those who seek God's wisdom, their godly influence will rub off on us.

This does not mean we avoid people who do not know Jesus. We are called to be salt and light in the world. But it does mean we need to be intentional about who we allow to influence our thinking and decision-making. We need friends who will encourage us toward wisdom, not away from it.

When I was a young pastor, I was blessed to have several older, wiser pastors who took me under their wing. They did not just teach me through formal mentoring sessions. They invited me into their lives, let me see how they handled difficult situations, and modeled what wise leadership looked like. Their influence shaped me more than any book or seminary class ever could.

Evaluate your closest relationships. Are the people you spend the most time with encouraging you toward wisdom or away from it? If needed, make adjustments to spend more time with those who will help you grow in godliness.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the wise people You have placed in my life. Help me be intentional about the relationships I cultivate. Give me discernment to recognize those who will help me grow in wisdom and the courage to limit my time with those who might lead me astray. Make me the kind of friend who encourages others toward You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
