Wisdom In Forgiveness
"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” - Ephesians 4:32
Forgiveness is not just a nice idea. It is a command and a necessity for our own spiritual and emotional health.
Paul connects our forgiveness of others to God's forgiveness of us. We forgive not because people deserve it but because Christ forgave us when we did not deserve it. This puts forgiveness in proper perspective. It is not about the other person's worthiness but about our obedience to God and our understanding of grace.
Forgiveness does not mean we pretend the hurt never happened or that we immediately trust someone who has betrayed us. It means we release our right to revenge and choose to bless rather than curse. It means we stop rehearsing the offense and start praying for the offender. This is wisdom because unforgiveness hurts us more than it hurts the person who wronged us.
Years ago, someone I trusted deeply betrayed that trust in a way that affected my family and my ministry. The hurt was profound, and forgiveness felt impossible. But God showed me that holding onto that bitterness was like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Forgiveness was not about letting them off the hook but about freeing myself from the prison of resentment. It took time, but choosing to forgive was one of the most liberating decisions I have ever made.
Is there someone you need to forgive? You do not have to feel like forgiving to choose to forgive. Make the decision today to release that person from the debt they owe you and pray for God's blessing on their life.
Prayer:
Father, forgiveness is hard, but I choose to obey Your command to forgive as You have forgiven me. Help me release the hurt and bitterness I have been carrying. Give me the strength to bless those who have hurt me and to trust You with justice. Free me from the prison of unforgiveness and fill my heart with Your peace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
