The Prison Of Bitterness
"For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” - Matthew 6:14–15
Unforgiveness is a prison where you are both the prisoner and the jailer. You hold the key to your own freedom, but bitterness convinces you that the person who hurt you should be the one to pay. Meanwhile, they are living their life while you are consumed with anger and resentment.
Forgiveness is not about excusing what was done to you or pretending it didn't happen. It's not about trusting someone who has proven untrustworthy or putting yourself in a position to be hurt again. Forgiveness is about releasing your right to revenge and trusting God to handle the situation justly.
The hardest person to forgive is often yourself. You replay your mistakes over and over, punishing yourself for choices you cannot undo. But God's forgiveness is complete and final. If He has forgiven you, who are you to hold onto guilt that He has removed?
Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling. You don't have to feel like forgiving to choose to forgive. In fact, the feelings usually follow the choice, not the other way around. When you choose to forgive, you are choosing freedom over bondage, peace over turmoil, and God's way over your own desire for revenge.
Is there someone you need to forgive, including yourself? Make the choice to forgive today, even if you don't feel like it. Ask God to help you release the bitterness and trust Him with the outcome.
Prayer:
Father, I choose to forgive those who have hurt me, just as You have forgiven me. Help me to release my anger and bitterness and trust You to handle justice. If I have been holding onto guilt and shame, I choose to receive Your forgiveness completely. Set me free from the prison of unforgiveness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
