Persevering Through Trials

"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." - Romans 5:3-4

Paul's words sound almost crazy to our modern ears. Glory in suffering? Celebrate our trials? Either Paul had lost his mind, or he understood something about hardship that transforms everything.

Paul isn't suggesting that we become masochists who enjoy pain. He's revealing a spiritual process that turns our trials into triumph. Suffering produces perseverance—the ability to keep going when everything in you wants to quit. Perseverance produces character—the kind of inner strength that can't be shaken by circumstances. And character produces hope—a confident expectation that God will see you through.

This process doesn't happen automatically. Suffering can make us bitter instead of better, weak instead of strong, hopeless instead of hopeful. The difference is in how we respond to the trial. When we choose to trust God in the midst of difficulty, when we lean into His strength instead of our own, when we look for what He's teaching us instead of just wanting the pain to stop—that's when suffering becomes productive.

The hope that emerges from this process isn't wishful thinking or positive self-talk. It's a deep confidence that comes from experiencing God's faithfulness in the fire. When you've seen Him carry you through one trial, you know He'll carry you through the next one.

If you're facing a trial right now, ask God to help you see it as a character-building opportunity rather than just an obstacle to overcome. Look for ways He's developing perseverance, character, and hope in you through this difficulty. Trust that He's using it for your good and His glory.

Prayer:
Father, I don't enjoy suffering, but I trust that You can use it to make me more like Jesus. Help me to persevere through whatever trials I'm facing, knowing that You're developing my character and deepening my hope. Give me the strength to keep going and the wisdom to learn what You want to teach me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Thank you for this, like an extension of yesterday's devotional, this is a good reminder of the focus on God and not my own want to control everything.

God turned our trials, heart aches, and tears into beautiful blessings. Over 38 years ago, we had twins. One of our girls struggled for her life the first two years. She was hospitalized 10 times. Each time the doctors informed us that her chances of survival were slim. Each time, God revealed His healing power. When she was 9 months old, we were told after testing, that she is deaf. We prayed (without ceasing) that God would heal her. He did not. Our AWESOME Heavenly Father, revealed some of the greatest blessings through this struggle. Our daughter is now a beautiful young woman, our whole family had the opportunity to be a small part of the amazing Deaf Community, I became a state certified Sign Language Interpreter, and had the blessing of working with children in schools.

n My Jesus walked with us through everything, and continues to teach us and draw us closer to Him. There is no greater place to be than where our Father wants us… even when it hurts. He brings peace, heals hurts, and brings blessings beyond our imaginations.

Yes I agree the suffering is no fun at all, but knowing that Jesus Christ can heal and recover us all is a true victory.

nPerseverance is all I can think about right now no matter how I look on the outside. God knows my heart and I'm thankful that I can invite him in each and every day to cleanse me and make me whole again.

n I'm grateful for these devotions, because it helps me carry on one day at a time. I've suffered with addiction for many years and felt all alone, but I know in my heart now that I'm not alone and that Jesus Christ carries me when I'm not able to walk on my own I'm grateful for CBC and was able to go and give my donation I believe in the Supernatural and God is working on me it's all in process and his will be done for the glory of God and his kingdom your loving daughter Amén
