Your Identity In Christ
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." - 1 Peter 2:9
Who are you? It's a simple question with a complex answer. The world will try to define you by what you do, what you own, what you've accomplished, or what others think of you. But God has already defined who you are, and His definition is the only one that matters.
Peter gives us four powerful identity markers that belong to every believer. You are chosen—not by accident or chance, but by God's deliberate selection. You are royal—not because of your bloodline, but because you're part of God's family. You are holy—not because you're perfect, but because you've been set apart for God's purposes. You are His special possession—not because of your value to the world, but because of your value to Him.
These aren't aspirational goals; these are present realities. This is who you are right now, today, regardless of how you feel or what you've done. Your identity isn't based on your performance; it's based on God's grace. You don't earn these titles; you receive them as gifts when you surrender your life to Christ.
But notice the purpose: "that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." Your identity isn't just about you—it's about pointing others to the God who transformed you. When you live out of your true identity in Christ, you become a walking testimony of His goodness and grace.
Write down the four identity markers from this verse and put them somewhere you'll see them daily. When negative thoughts about yourself arise, remind yourself of who God says you are. Live out of your true identity in Christ, not the false identities the world tries to assign you.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for choosing me, making me royal, setting me apart, and claiming me as Your own. Help me to live out of this identity rather than the false identities the world offers. When I'm tempted to find my worth in what I do or what others think, remind me of who You say I am. Use my life to declare Your praises. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Thank you. I am guilty of this as well. And performance does have a part to play in the eyes of the world. But since I am relying on God it doesn’t quite add up all the time. I’ll find myself demonstrating quite a contradiction. God sets things out for me to do and those things don’t always line up with what I am doing. I’ll do too much and before you know it I’m confused. Trying so hard to do stuff He never asked me to do. Just me being me sometimes is all He commanded me to do. But I’ll be bouncing around trying to be super man anyway. At that point it’s not about God anymore but about me chasing pride. Don’t let me get the right answer or on my game too much. Looking back I have made life way harder than it ever needed to be. It’s calming down now though. In every area. Slowly realizing this truth you are saying here and it’s the same truth God showed me already. He loves me just the way I am. I am enough. And my past has been erased in His eyes. He will no longer keep track of my sins nor will He leave me. Not ever again.
Thank you for being so faithful. God uses you over and over again to confirm that we are planted in the right house under the right shepherd. Time and time again, He uses you to confirm exactly what the Holy Spirit has been walking me through during the week — and it never fails. He’ll be leading me through something, and then the very next day or Sunday, you speak directly on it.

nIt happened with the “Spirit and Truth” message, the entire Oil series, the message about the 5 wise vs. foolish virgins — even random moments that probably seemed insignificant to you. Like the time you randomly held up 3 fingers like “Hunger Games” and whistled like “Tribute!” ? You probably don’t even remember doing that or realize there was a reason behind it… but YOU DID! Lol! You even stopped and laughed and said, “Dear God, I don’t know why I did that!” Meanwhile I was sitting there wanting to yell, “OMG, I know why you did that!” ?
n
nOne day I hope I get to tell you the significance of that moment and you don’t think I’m some “weirdo” Christian lol!!
n
nI just really wanted to encourage you. God uses you, my friend — through every word, every side note, every little weave in your stories. I love it because it’s so evident that you stay at His feet and walk in lockstep with His heartbeat.
n
nYou and my sister Stephanie are both so on point. I’ve prayed many times, and God has confirmed to me that I need to be like Fenway in my walk with Him — so close that I might accidentally step on Jesus’ slipper/chancla ?
n
nI’m just so grateful to be part of this house.

nYesterday, a friend and I were talking about identity in Christ — learning who we are in Him first before trying to figure out our roles. So many of us spend years trying to play roles God never assigned to us. For example, trying to mother our husbands instead of learning how to be a godly wife.
n
nAnyway, all I really wanted to say is: God is so good, and thank you for being faithful.

nMy brother from another mother. :)
NATALIE ... I sure hope Pastor Ed reads ALL our comments. Though most will not comment, I believe they read the comments. It's a wonderful way to keep our finger on the pulse, to hear how our sisters and brothers are resonating with the daily devotionals, and it's a great opportunity to PRAY for each other! Since you brought up the 3 fingers like "Hunger Games” and him whistling like “Tribute!” ... I don't recall that so it must have been in your service only and meant just for YOU. I hope you come back to read this because you've intrigued me and I want to know the story behind it. Pastor Ed is indeed led by the Holy Spirit and we are richly blessed to be under his teaching.
MY IDENTITY IN CHRIST ....
nBecause of Christ's redemption, I am a new creation of infinite worth. I am deeply loved, completely forgiven, fully pleasing, totally accepted by God and absolutely complete in Christ.
amén!
Amen
