Breaking the Pattern

"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." – James 1:22

If you have ever seen a circus elephant, you have probably wondered how such a massive, powerful animal can be kept in place by a simple shackle. As a baby, the elephant is tied to a stake in the ground, unable to move freely. Over time, it learns that when the shackle is on, it is stuck. It stops trying to break free. Even as it grows to a size that could easily rip the stake from the ground, it does not. The shackle alone is enough to convince the elephant that escape is impossible.

This is what the enemy does to you. He convinces you that you are stuck. That addiction, that lie, that failure, that pain from your past—he has used it to create a pattern in your life that makes you believe you cannot break free. He does not even have to fight you anymore. As long as you believe you cannot change, you will stay right where you are.

But that shackle is not as strong as you think. It only holds you if you let it. Jesus has already broken the chains. The question is, will you live like it?

Maybe your shackle is an addiction. Maybe it is the way you think about yourself. Maybe it is something that happened to you or something you did that made you believe you would always be this way. But Jesus says something different.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. The new has come!" (2 Corinthians 5:17)

You are not the person the enemy says you are. You are not defined by your past. But if you keep living in the same pattern of behavior, you will keep getting the same results. If you want freedom, you have to walk in it. You cannot just hear the truth. You have to act on it.

What has been holding you back? What is the lie that has convinced you that you cannot move forward? It is time to break the pattern. It is time to step into the life Jesus has already made possible. The shackle is loose. You just have to walk away from it.
