The Joy Of Salvation

"Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me." - Psalm 51:12

Joy is fundamentally different from happiness. Happiness depends on what happens to you; joy depends on who lives within you. Happiness is temporary; joy is resilient. Salvation brings a deep, abiding joy that circumstances cannot steal.

David wrote this psalm after his terrible moral failure with Bathsheba. He was crushed by guilt and had lost the joy of his salvation, but notice something important: he didn't ask God to restore his salvation. He knew God was faithful. He asked for the joy of it to return. Sometimes, in the grind of life or under the weight of our own mistakes, we can become so focused on our failures that we forget the incredible gift of grace we have received. We lose the wonder. God wants to restore that gratitude, that lightness of spirit, that joy that comes from knowing you are washed clean.

There was a season in my life when I felt spiritually dry. I was going through the motions of faith, attending church, and doing the right things, but my heart was flat. I had forgotten the miracle of being saved. I took a retreat to just pray and remember. As I recalled what God had saved me from and the eternity He had saved me for, the tears came, and the joy came flooding back. I realized I had let the dust of daily life cover the diamond of my salvation.

Take time today to mentally revisit your salvation story. Remember where you were and how you felt when you first understood the gospel. Thank God for rescuing you. Let that gratitude reignite your joy.

Lord, restore to me the joy of my salvation. Help me never to take for granted the miracle of what You have done for me. Fill my heart with wonder at Your grace and love. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Dear Pastor Ed,

n

nI just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the way you openly share your personal spiritual struggles with us. Your honesty and transparency mean more than you probably realize. It takes humility and courage to stand before others and speak candidly about the challenges you face in your own walk with God.

n

nYour willingness to be real about those moments not only makes your teaching relatable, but it also reminds us that we are not alone in our own struggles. Instead of feeling discouraged, we feel encouraged because you point us back to Scripture and give us practical ways to lean on the Lord during difficult seasons.

n

nI especially appreciate how you don’t stop at sharing the struggle—you also guide us toward the hope, wisdom, and strength found in God’s Word. Those reminders help us see that even in hard times, God is present, faithful, and actively working in our lives.

n

nThank you for leading with authenticity, humility, and faith. Your transparency strengthens our church and helps us grow deeper in our relationship with Christ.

n

nPlease know that you are appreciated and prayed for. Your leadership, honesty, and commitment to shepherding us anll are a true blessing.

n

nWith gratitude
