No Days Off

"Be sober-minded; be watchful, your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." – 1 Peter 5:8

Back in the day, I used to hoop. I know some people question whether I was ever really an athlete, but there was a time when I lived and breathed basketball. My high school coach had a way of motivating me that stuck with me. He’d say, “Newton.” “Yes, sir?” “When you don’t practice, your opponent is. And when the two of you meet, he will beat you.”

Maybe you’ve heard something like that before, whether you play sports or not. The idea is simple. While you’re resting, someone else is grinding. While you’re taking it easy, someone else is putting in the work. And when the two of you meet, the one who prepared will win. That drove me. It made me wake up every day ready to put in the work, no days off.

Here’s the truth. There are no vacation days in spiritual warfare. The devil doesn’t give you the weekends off. He doesn’t care if you’ve had a rough week or if life’s been knocking you down. He’s not easing up because you’re tired. The enemy is always on the prowl, looking for moments of weakness to take you down.

That’s why the Bible says, “Be sober-minded; be watchful.” Staying sober-minded means staying alert, ready, and aware of what’s happening around you. It means being intentional about your walk with Jesus, never letting your guard down, and filling the gaps in your life with the truth of God’s Word.

The devil is relentless, so you have to be just as relentless in your pursuit of God. Stay battle-ready. Keep building holy habits. Keep pressing into His presence. And remember, the fight isn’t about being perfect. It’s about staying prepared.

No days off. Not when it comes to walking in victory. Not when it comes to living the life God has called you to. Stay ready, and you’ll stay standing.
