The Breastplate of Righteousness

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." – 1 John 1:9

The Breastplate of Righteousness is your protection over one of the most vulnerable areas of your life, your heart. The enemy knows that if he can corrupt your heart, he can corrupt your walk with God. That’s why God gave you this critical piece of armor.

What does the enemy want to do? He wants you to believe that you are still defined by your sin. He wants you to live in guilt, shame, and condemnation. He wants you to think that your past mistakes have ruined your future. But God says something completely different.

When you put on the Breastplate of Righteousness, you are not putting on your own goodness. You’re putting on the righteousness of Jesus. It’s His perfection covering your imperfections. It’s His holiness covering your unworthiness. And it’s not because you earned it or deserve it. It’s because He chose to give it to you.

1 John 1:9 gives you this assurance. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” That means when you come to God with a heart of repentance, He doesn’t just forgive you. He cleanses you. He makes you righteous in His sight.

God’s Word says your sin is thrown into the depths of the ocean. It’s removed as far as the east is from the west. You are no longer defined by your failures. You are defined by His grace. You are righteous. You are holy. You are chosen in Jesus’ name.

But the Breastplate of Righteousness only protects you when you choose to put it on. Too many people are walking around exposed, allowing shame and guilt to rule their hearts instead of God’s truth. If you don’t cover yourself with His righteousness, the enemy’s accusations will keep you living in defeat.

Putting on the Breastplate of Righteousness means accepting God’s forgiveness and living in His truth. It means refusing to let the enemy’s lies convince you that you are anything less than who God says you are. You are forgiven. You are cleansed. You are righteous because of Jesus.

Today, cover your heart with His righteousness. Claim His promises over your life. And walk in the freedom He has already given you.

I find this habit to be maybe the most difficult to keep up with these days. I get busy working so much sometimes that I don’t take the time to really look at myself every night. I also find that having a close group of brothers to share life with really helps with this. It gives me an opportunity to share my failures in a way that also brings strength to them while we are all on this path. Lately I have been so busy that I have slacked off on both of these to some degree. I know that I am forgiven in Gods eyes. It is my own heart now that carries the weight and the effect it has on others is important to me.
