The Temptation of Power

"Then Jesus said to him, 'Be gone, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'" – Matthew 4:10

The third temptation wasn’t just a test. It was an all-out attempt by the devil to get Jesus to betray His purpose. This time, the devil pulled out all the stops. He took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And then came the offer. “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

Think about what the enemy was really offering. Power, authority, glory, and influence. All the kingdoms of the world handed over in an instant. No suffering. No cross. No pain. Just one moment of bowing down, and the devil was willing to surrender it all.

The enemy was trying to convince Jesus to take a shortcut. To seize what was already promised to Him, but through the enemy’s way instead of God’s way. Because deep down, Satan knew the pain and sacrifice Jesus would have to go through to fulfill His purpose. And if he could get Jesus to abandon that purpose, he could sabotage everything.

But Jesus didn’t hesitate. His response was immediate and powerful. “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Jesus refused to compromise. He refused to trade His obedience to the Father for temporary power and glory.

This temptation hits home more than you might realize. The enemy tries to lure you into compromising your faith for shortcuts. He offers you cheap substitutes for what God has already promised. Maybe it’s status, influence, money, relationships, or pleasure. Whatever it is, he’s trying to get you to bow down to something other than God.

And here’s the hard truth. The enemy’s way will always look easier. It will always seem like a faster route to get what you want. But it’s a trap. Every time. Because if you have to compromise your worship and obedience to God to get something, then what you’re chasing isn’t worth having.

Jesus showed you the right response. Reject the shortcuts. Refuse the compromises. Declare, “Be gone, Satan!” and choose to worship and serve God alone. Because when you do, you’re not just rejecting the enemy’s lies, you’re stepping fully into God’s purpose for your life.

Don’t settle for less than God’s best. Stand firm. Worship Him alone. And let Him be the One who gives you everything you truly need.

Thank you so much for all these Pastor Ed. I’m starting to see how while before I couldn’t relate now I can. The shortcuts or temporary pleasures that go against Gods nature don’t have to be these huge things like ruling the earth. It can be as simple as choosing selfish desires over being there for others. When you said compromise it hit home. Compromising our purity in a kind of chase. When I have done that it didn’t really seem like what it was. But the fear was that I wouldn’t get that feeling I was looking for otherwise. I was wrong. Stand firm. The real treasure is everlasting. I am kind of impressed.
