Run Your Race

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." - Hebrews 12:1-2

You are in a race. Not a sprint, not a quick lap, but a lifelong race that God Himself has marked out just for you. The truth is that some days feel like you are making progress, and other days feel like you are barely moving forward at all. But the key word in this passage is endurance. God never promised the race would be easy, but He calls you to keep going no matter what.

We are reminded that we are not running alone. You are surrounded by a “great cloud of witnesses.” Those who have gone before you, who have fought their battles, run their races, and remained faithful. Their lives now cheer you on as you keep pressing forward.

But notice what the verse tells us to do first: lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely. It is one thing to run a race, but it is nearly impossible when you are weighed down. What are you carrying today that is slowing you down? Maybe it’s fear, shame, guilt, comparison, or bitterness. Whatever it is, it is not meant for you to carry. To run freely, you have to lay it down.

And most importantly, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. He is the founder and perfecter of your faith. He is your example. He endured the cross, took on your shame, and finished His race so that you could run yours with strength and purpose. When you feel like giving up, look to Him. He knows what it means to endure, and He has promised to be with you every step of the way.

So strip off what is holding you back. Refuse to be tangled up in things that keep you stuck. Lift your eyes to Jesus and keep running your race with endurance. Your victory is not about being the fastest. It’s about staying faithful to the end. Keep going. You are not running alone.
