Wisdom Applied

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” - James 1:5

Knowing what is wise and actually living wisely are two different things. Today we focus on putting God's wisdom into practice.

James gives us one of the most encouraging promises in Scripture. When we lack wisdom, we can ask God, and He will give it generously without making us feel foolish for asking. The word "generously" here means abundantly, liberally, without holding back. God is not stingy with His wisdom. He wants to pour it out on our lives.

But notice that James assumes we will need to ask. This implies that wisdom is not automatic. It requires humility to admit we need help and faith to believe God will provide it. The beautiful part is that God never responds with, "You should have figured this out by now." Instead, He gives wisdom without reproach, without condemnation, without making us feel small for needing His help.

I learned this lesson powerfully when our church was going through a difficult season. I was overwhelmed by decisions that seemed to have no clear right answer. One morning, I literally got on my knees and said, "God, I have no idea what to do. I need Your wisdom." Over the next few days, clarity came through prayer, counsel from wise friends, and Scripture. The situation did not become simple, but the next steps became clear.

Identify one specific situation in your life where you need wisdom right now. Stop and ask God for His guidance. Then take one practical step based on what you sense He is leading you to do.

Prayer:
Lord, I admit that I need Your wisdom more than I often realize. Thank You for the promise that when I ask, You give generously without making me feel foolish. I bring before You the specific situations where I need Your guidance. Please make Your will clear and give me the courage to follow where You lead. In Jesus' name, Amen.
