Don’t Run From God’s Call

"But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up." - Jonah 1:4

When God calls you to something, it’s tempting to let fear hold you back. Maybe the task seems too big, too risky, or too far outside your comfort zone. You might be tempted to run, to avoid the calling, or even convince yourself that it’s not really for you. But no matter how afraid you are, running from God’s call will never lead you to the peace or fulfillment you’re looking for.

Jonah learned this the hard way. God gave him a clear command to go to Nineveh and deliver a message, but Jonah was afraid. He didn’t want to go, so he ran in the opposite direction. Instead of heading toward Nineveh, he boarded a ship bound for Tarshish, hoping to flee from God’s plan. But no matter how far Jonah tried to run, God’s calling didn’t change, and neither did the consequences of running from it.

As Jonah fled, a great storm arose, threatening the ship and everyone on board. Jonah’s disobedience didn’t bring him peace, it brought turmoil. The same is true for us when we run from what God is calling us to do.

No matter how afraid you are of stepping into what God is calling you to do, you will never be more protected, more at peace, or more fulfilled than when you are walking in His purpose for your life. God’s plan is always for your good, even when it’s difficult or daunting. Running away might feel like a temporary escape, but it’s only by embracing God’s call that you will experience true joy and peace.

Jonah’s story didn’t end with the storm. After spending time in the belly of a great fish, Jonah finally submitted to God’s plan, and when he obeyed, God worked through him in a powerful way. The city of Nineveh repented, and God’s mercy was displayed. Jonah’s obedience, even after running, led to an incredible outcome.

If you’re feeling the urge to run from God’s call, don’t. The fear you feel is no match for the peace and joy that come from being in the center of God’s will. You may not have all the answers, and the path may not be easy, but God will be with you every step of the way. His calling is not just for His glory, it’s for your good, too.
