Celebrating True Independence

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” - John 8:36

Today we celebrate our nation's independence, but as believers, we have an even greater freedom to celebrate. Political freedom is precious, but spiritual freedom is eternal. Our founding fathers fought for liberty from an earthly king, but Jesus fought for our liberty from the kingdom of darkness.

The Declaration of Independence states that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights. But sin had alienated us from our Creator and forfeited those rights. Jesus came to restore what was lost and to give us rights as children of God that no earthly government can take away.

You have the right to approach God's throne with confidence. You have the right to be called a child of God. You have the right to eternal life. You have the right to peace that passes understanding. These rights were purchased with blood and guaranteed by resurrection power.

As you watch fireworks tonight or attend a barbecue today, remember that your greatest celebration is not just your freedom from tyranny, but your freedom from sin and death. You are a citizen of heaven with rights and privileges that will never expire.

Take time today to thank God for both your political freedom and your spiritual freedom. Share with someone the good news that Jesus offers true independence to all who believe.

Prayer:
Lord, as we celebrate our nation's independence today, I am reminded of the greater freedom You have given me. Thank You for breaking the chains of sin and death. Help me to never take this freedom for granted and to share this good news with others who are still in bondage. Bless our nation and may we always remember that our ultimate allegiance is to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
