Overcoming Envy
"A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.” - Proverbs 14:30
Envy is contentment's greatest enemy. It whispers that everyone else has it better, that God loves others more, and that you are missing out on the good life. Envy takes your eyes off God's blessings in your life and fixes them on what He has given to others. It is a poison that destroys peace and robs joy.
The word "tranquil" in this verse refers to a heart that is healed, whole, and at peace. This kind of heart gives life not only to the person who possesses it but to everyone around them. In contrast, envy literally rots the bones. It destroys from the inside out, affecting not just your emotions but your physical health.
Envy is often rooted in a misunderstanding of God's character. We assume that His blessings are limited, that if He gives good things to others, there will be less for us. But God's goodness is not a pie with limited slices. His resources are unlimited, and His love is inexhaustible. When we celebrate others' victories, we position ourselves to receive His blessings in our own lives.
The antidote to envy is gratitude and celebration. Instead of resenting others' successes, choose to rejoice with them. Instead of focusing on what you lack, thank God for what you have. Instead of assuming God has forgotten you, remember His faithfulness in the past and trust His goodness for the future.
I have learned that the people who struggle most with envy are often the ones who have forgotten their own blessings. When you regularly practice gratitude, it becomes much easier to celebrate others without feeling diminished. A thankful heart is a tranquil heart, and a tranquil heart gives life to everyone it touches.
Prayer:
Father, I confess that envy sometimes creeps into my heart when I see others blessed in ways I long to be blessed. Forgive me for questioning Your goodness and for resenting others' victories. Give me a tranquil heart that celebrates with others and trusts in Your perfect timing. Help me to remember my own blessings and to be grateful for Your faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
