Wisdom With Words

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” - Proverbs 18:21

Our words have incredible power to build up or tear down, to bring healing or cause harm. Wise people learn to use their words carefully.

Every day we make choices about how to use our words. We can speak life into someone's day with encouragement, or we can crush their spirit with criticism. We can build bridges with our conversations, or we can burn them down with careless comments. The tongue is a small part of the body, but James tells us it can set the whole course of our lives on fire.

Wise people understand that words are not just sounds that disappear into the air. They have lasting impact. They shape relationships, influence decisions, and reveal the condition of our hearts. Jesus said that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. If we want to speak wisely, we need to cultivate wisdom in our hearts.

I learned this lesson the hard way early in my marriage. During an argument with my wife, I said something that was technically true but incredibly hurtful. Even though I apologized, those words lingered in our relationship for months. That experience taught me that being right is not always the same as being wise. Sometimes the wisest thing to say is nothing at all, and sometimes the wisest words are "I was wrong, please forgive me."

Before you speak today, especially in tense or emotional situations, pause and ask yourself: "Are these words going to bring life or death? Will they build up or tear down?" Choose your words with the wisdom that comes from above.

Prayer:
Lord, help me use my words wisely today. Before I speak, remind me of the power my words carry. Help me speak life, encouragement, and truth in love. When I am tempted to say something hurtful or careless, give me the wisdom to pause and choose better words. Let my speech be seasoned with grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
