Wisdom In Marriage

"However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” - Ephesians 5:33

A strong marriage requires wisdom, intentionality, and a commitment to put God's design above our own preferences.

God's design for marriage is not about one person being superior to another. It is about two people with different strengths and roles working together to reflect Christ's relationship with the church. Husbands are called to love sacrificially, putting their wives' needs above their own. Wives are called to respect and support their husbands, even when they disagree with their decisions.

This requires wisdom because it goes against our natural tendencies. We naturally want to be loved and respected, but God calls us to give what our spouse needs most, even when we are not receiving what we need in return. This creates a positive cycle where both spouses feel valued and appreciated.

Early in our marriage, Stephanie and I struggled because I was trying to earn her respect by being more loving, and she was trying to earn my love by being more respectful. We had it backwards. When I started focusing on loving her sacrificially without expecting respect in return, she naturally began to respond with more respect. And when she focused on respecting me without demanding love in return, I was motivated to love her even more.

If you are married, focus today on giving your spouse what they need most rather than demanding what you want. If you are single, pray for the marriages in your life and look for ways to encourage couples you know.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of marriage and the way it reflects Your love for the church. Give me wisdom to love and serve my spouse well. Help me focus on giving rather than receiving, and create a cycle of love and respect in our relationship. Bless the marriages in our community and make them strong testimonies of Your faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
