Wisdom In Doubt
"And have mercy on those who doubt.” - Jude 22
Doubt is not the opposite of faith. It is often the pathway to a deeper, more mature faith.
Jude tells us to have mercy on those who doubt, which implies that doubt is a normal part of the human experience. Even great men and women of faith in the Bible experienced seasons of doubt. John the Baptist, who baptized Jesus, later sent messengers to ask if Jesus was really the Messiah. Thomas needed to see and touch Jesus' wounds before he believed in the resurrection.
The key is what we do with our doubts. We can let them drive us away from God, or we can bring them to God and ask Him to strengthen our faith. Doubt becomes dangerous when we nurse it in isolation, but it can become a tool for growth when we wrestle with it in community and in prayer.
During my doctoral studies, I went through a season of intellectual doubt about some aspects of my faith. Instead of pretending everything was fine, I found a wise mentor who had wrestled with similar questions. He helped me see that doubt can be a sign of a growing mind, not a weak faith. Through study, prayer, and honest conversation, my faith emerged stronger and more grounded than before.
If you are struggling with doubts about your faith, do not suffer in silence. Find a trusted pastor, mentor, or friend who can walk with you through your questions. Remember that God is big enough to handle your doubts.
Prayer:
Lord, I bring my doubts and questions to You, knowing that You are not threatened by them. Help me work through my uncertainties with wisdom and grace. Surround me with people who can help me grow through my doubts rather than being destroyed by them. Strengthen my faith and deepen my understanding of Your truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
