Wisdom Through Suffering
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” - James 1:2–4
Some of life's greatest wisdom comes through its most difficult seasons. God uses trials to develop character in us that cannot be formed any other way.
James tells us to "count it all joy" when we face trials. This seems impossible until we understand what trials accomplish in our lives. They test our faith, proving whether it is real or superficial. They produce steadfastness, which is the ability to keep going when everything in us wants to quit. And ultimately, they make us "perfect and complete," which means mature and lacking nothing we need to fulfill God's purposes.
This does not mean we should seek out suffering or pretend to be happy when we are in pain. It means we can have joy in the midst of trials because we know God is using them to make us more like Jesus. The wisdom that comes through suffering is deep, authentic, and unshakeable because it has been tested by fire.
One of the most difficult seasons of my life came early in my ministry when I faced criticism and opposition that nearly broke me. I wanted to quit, to find an easier path. But God used that season to teach me lessons about His faithfulness, my identity in Him, and the importance of perseverance that I never could have learned in easier times. The wisdom gained through that trial has served me well in every challenge since.
If you are going through a trial right now, ask God what He wants to teach you through it. Look for the ways He is developing your character and deepening your faith. If you are in a season of peace, thank God for it and prepare your heart for future challenges by growing in His Word and prayer.
Prayer:
Lord, I do not enjoy trials, but I trust that You use them for my good and Your glory. When I face difficulties, help me see them as opportunities to grow in faith and character. Give me the strength to persevere and the wisdom to learn what You want to teach me. Thank You that You never waste our pain but use it to make us more like Jesus. In Jesus' name, Amen.
