Wisdom In Leadership
"Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.” - 1 Peter 5:2–3
Whether you lead in the church, at work, or in your family, godly leadership requires wisdom, humility, and a servant's heart.
Peter gives us the heart of wise leadership: it is about serving others, not being served. Leaders are shepherds who care for the flock, not rulers who dominate their subjects. They lead by example, not by force. They serve willingly and eagerly, not for personal gain but for the good of those they lead.
This kind of leadership is countercultural. The world says leadership is about power, position, and privilege. But Jesus showed us that true leadership is about washing feet, sacrificing for others, and empowering people to become all God created them to be. This requires wisdom because it goes against our natural desire for control and recognition.
When I first became a pastor, I thought leadership meant having all the answers and making all the decisions. But I quickly learned that the best leaders are those who ask good questions, listen carefully, and empower others to use their gifts. Some of the best decisions our church has made came from ideas that originated with other people. My job is not to be the smartest person in the room but to create an environment where everyone can contribute their best.
If you are in a leadership position, evaluate your motivation and methods. Are you leading to serve others or to serve yourself? Are you empowering people or controlling them? If you are not in formal leadership, look for ways to influence others positively through your example.
Prayer:
Lord, whether I lead many people or just influence a few, help me lead with wisdom and humility. Give me a servant's heart that seeks the good of others above my own interests. Help me lead by example and empower others to use their gifts for Your glory. Make me the kind of leader that reflects Your character. In Jesus' name, Amen.
