Integrity in the Shadows

"But he refused and said to his master's wife, 'Behold, because of me, my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge.'” - Genesis 39:8

Joseph’s story is filled with ups and downs, but one of the most striking moments was when he faced temptation in Potiphar’s house. Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him, and though he was alone and no one was watching, Joseph made a powerful choice: he refused her advances.

This decision wasn’t just about avoiding immediate consequences, it was rooted in his deep sense of integrity. He understood that his character and relationship with God mattered far more than any fleeting pleasure.

Integrity is often tested in moments when we think no one is looking. It’s easy to do the right thing when others are around, but true integrity is about who you are when you’re all alone. Joseph’s refusal to betray his master and compromise his values demonstrated that his commitment to righteousness transcended the fear of being caught. He realized that every action reflects our character and, ultimately, our relationship with God.

When you think about your own life, consider how often you face situations where integrity is tested. It might be in the workplace, at home, or even in private moments when you have the option to take a shortcut or do what’s easier. These choices shape not only how others perceive you but also how you perceive yourself and your relationship with God.

When you uphold your values, even in private, you’re building a foundation for a life marked by trustworthiness and authenticity. You’re showing yourself and others that your character isn’t defined by circumstances but by your commitment to God.

So, the next time you find yourself facing a choice where integrity is on the line, remember Joseph. Embrace the understanding that true integrity isn’t about avoiding punishment, it’s about living a life that reflects your faith.

Choose to do what is right, even when no one is watching, knowing that God is always aware of your heart and intentions. He honors those who honor Him, and in the end, your integrity will lead to a life that’s not only pleasing to God but also filled with purpose and fulfillment.

I used to hold fast to the mirror standard. I have to be able to look myself in the mirror and know that I honestly did all I could. Proud to be who I am based on what I have done. These days though, since I have accepted Jesus as my Truth, I can be more honest. Truthfully at my core I am more of a monster than to be drenched in pride. It is by His grace and sacrifice that I can walk confidently today. It’s the rock on which I have built my life. So very grateful for this gift of honesty. I need God like I need air to breathe.
