Your Past Prepares You for God's Future

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”- Romans 8:28

Have you ever looked back at your life and wondered why certain things happened the way they did? Maybe you’ve questioned the struggles, the hardships, or even the parts of your past that seem like they have no purpose. It’s easy to think that those moments were just random, painful experiences that left scars. But what if I told you that God has been using every part of your story—your upbringing, your challenges, your victories—to prepare you for the future He has planned for you?

God doesn’t waste anything. Every piece of your past, no matter how difficult or confusing it seems, is part of the larger picture He is painting for your life. Think about the way God used Moses’ past to shape him into the leader who would deliver the Israelites from Egypt. Moses grew up in Pharaoh's household, learning the ways of the Egyptians, only to later find himself as a shepherd in the wilderness. That time as a shepherd, away from Egypt, was far from a waste—it was God preparing him for the role of leader, the very calling that would require patience, wisdom, and the ability to guide a stubborn people.

Your past works the same way. Whether you grew up with great privilege or faced significant hardships, God has been using every experience to shape you. Those things that seemed unimportant or even painful are the very things that will equip you to step into the calling God has for you. The patience you learned through hardship, the empathy you gained from loss, the resilience you developed through challenges—God can use it all.

It’s easy to ask, “Why did I have to go through that?” But Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Your past isn’t just random—it’s God’s preparation for your future. The experiences that have shaped you are not just memories to forget; they are tools that will equip you for the journey ahead.

So, if you’re struggling to see the purpose in your past, remember that God is at work. He’s using every part of your life to prepare you for the calling He has on your future. Trust Him, embrace your story, and watch as He uses your past to shape a powerful future.

Thank you Pastor Ed! And thank you to the person who also commented yesterday too. I struggled so much trying to find God in my life. I just wanted to be able to get my act together and I had been told right from the beginning that I needed God. After over 20 years of suffering I couldn’t see any longer how it all could have been worth it or that it would ever make any sense. It’s pretty remarkable how it has absolutely been worth it and more. Making sense of it all may be a little different but atleast I trust Him now that it does. I just wanted God, but He gave me Jesus. What a wonderful most amazing gift. It’s like winning the lottery jackpot every single day for the rest of my life. I am so grateful for Him. And grateful for you Pastor Ed, our church, and also the body of Christ. Everywhere I go I have a spiritual family I can connect with in some way.
