Not Defined by Possessions
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." – Matthew 6:21
In a culture that constantly pushes us to acquire more, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that what we own defines who we are. Whether it’s the car we drive, the house we live in, or the clothes we wear, possessions can often become a symbol of success, security, and status. But the reality is that none of these things truly define you.
We’ve all been told that “stuff” is a sign of accomplishment; get the right job, earn the right salary, buy the right things, and you’ll have "made it." But material things are temporary, and they can be taken from us in an instant.
A job loss, a natural disaster, a financial setback, or any number of things could strip away the possessions we work so hard to accumulate. And when that happens, what are we left with? If our identity is tied to what we own, we are left feeling empty and lost.
God’s Word reminds us that our true treasure isn’t found in what we possess but in who we are in Christ. Your worth isn’t found in your bank account or the things you can accumulate, it’s found in the fact that you are loved by the Creator of the universe. You are not defined by the clothes you wear, the things you own, or the brand names you display. Those things may come and go, but your identity as a child of God is secure.
Jesus challenges us to focus our hearts on what truly matters. When we make possessions the focus of our lives, we are placing our hearts in something that is fleeting. Instead, God calls us to treasure the things that truly last; love, kindness, faith, and a heart devoted to Him.
Take a step back and ask yourself: Am I finding my value in my possessions? Or are you finding your value in being a child of God, chosen and loved beyond measure? Remember, no amount of material wealth can ever define you. You are defined by God’s love for you, and that is a treasure that will never fade.
