Mind the Gap

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7

If you've ever traveled to London, you might’ve noticed something unique about their subway system. They don’t call it the subway, they call it the tube. It’s a cool experience, but something really caught my attention while I was there. As you step into the tube, there’s this phrase you hear over and over: “Mind the gap.” You see it on signs, you hear it in recordings, “Mind the gap.”

Now, what’s that all about? Well, between the platform and the train, there’s a gap. It’s not massive, but it’s big enough to cause some serious damage if you’re not paying attention. They constantly warn people to “Mind the gap” because if you don’t, you can get hurt.

This got me thinking about our spiritual journey. There are moments when we lay things down before God. Maybe it’s a bad habit, a grudge, a fear, or a burden that’s been weighing you down. You bring it to God, you lay it at His feet, and you surrender it to Him. But here’s the thing: when you lay something down, it creates a gap.

The moment you surrender something to God, the enemy tries even harder to drag you back. You might wonder, “I gave this up to God, so why does the struggle feel even worse?” It’s because the enemy isn’t happy about your surrender. He’s fine with you looking like a Christian, but he’s terrified of you actually walking in the power and freedom God offers.

Here’s what you need to understand: when you leave a gap, it has to be filled. If you don’t intentionally fill that space with God’s truth, His Word, and His presence, the enemy will do his best to sneak something else in there. That’s why Scripture tells us to submit to God and resist the devil. It’s about filling the gap with God’s strength and not letting the enemy have a foothold.

So today, be mindful of the gaps. When you give something to God, fill that space with more of Him. Spend time in prayer, dig into His Word, and surround yourself with the truth that will help you walk in victory. Mind the gap and don’t give the enemy an inch.

Wow. I was just talking about this yesterday with my wife. Gave something up and started observing that very thing. I said hey that’s strange. Means I’m moving in the right direction. Thank you Pastor Ed!
