Carrying The Weight
“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” - Romans 12:3
Is there something you have done in your past that you are still carrying the weight of? Is there a sin you committed, a promise you broke, a lie you told, or something you did that still brings you an immense amount of shame and guilt?
Let me be the first to tell you that God never intended for you to carry that weight. That is exactly what Jesus died for! Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Then Peter declares, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds, you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepard and Overseer of your souls,” (1 Peter 2:24-25).
It is one thing if you have not asked for forgiveness of your sin, if you have not repented and turned away from the act. But if you have asked for forgiveness and given it over to God, it is time to let it go. You were never meant to carry that weight. You might be saying, “Pastor, you don’t what I’ve done…” But let me remind you of what Romans 12:3 says, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”
Many people think of this verse where it says “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought,” as speaking to someone who is their own biggest fan. But it can also be for those who are their own worst critic. Your sin is not above God’s forgiveness. You have not done anything that exceeds the grace of God. You are not higher than that. He is! Jesus carried His cross so that you wouldn’t have to. You were never meant to carry the weight. Let it go, give it to Him, and find peace in His grace!
