As He Increases
“He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” - John 3:30
John the Baptist, who baptizes Jesus, had a ministry that dated back to even before Jesus’ ministry. In John 3, we find that there are disciples of John who expressed some concern that people were following Jesus and being baptized by Him, rather than by John.
Because John’s ministry had begun earlier and he had already gained such a following, these people were concerned that some were beginning to bypass John altogether and going straight to Jesus. As they bring this concern to John the Baptist, he says something very simple, yet remarkable.
In John 3:30 he says, “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” John understands that he would have nothing if not what was given to him by the grace of God. John is implying that if his own ministry is granted from heaven, it is all about God’s plan.
And at the center of God’s plan is Jesus. God wanted John to lead others to Jesus. Even though God had exalted John and allowed him to gain a great following, it was all for the purpose of having a platform to lead others back to Him. And John fully understood that. Even as John’s platform grows, he understands he must decrease so that Jesus can increase.
What about you? Has God blessed you by placing you in a position of power? Has He given you influence in the lives of those around you? Have you gained a following on social media or in real life? God blesses you not so that you can promote yourself, but so that you will promote Him. He wants to put you in that position to allow you to share what He has done in your life.
As He increases, we must decrease. As you grow in your career, community, or whatever else it might be, don’t forget who allowed that growth, and remember to shine the spotlight back on Him.
