Believe The Hype
“One’s pride will bring Him low, but He who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.” - Proverbs 29:23
Have you ever watched an athlete, actor, or someone who when you saw them for the first time, you loved their humility? They weren’t a big name yet. They were just making their way onto the scene. But they had gotten good enough that they were just starting to garner a little attention.
So you notice how they perform, and then you hear them talk. And they speak with humility. They are grateful for the opportunity they have, blessed that God gave them the ability to do what they love. They turn all the attention back on God. But then, as their reputation builds, and the hype grows, they start to feed off the attention.
What was once about giving God the glory has turned into their personal glory. They begin to do things that point the finger at themselves. When they are interviewed, they no longer thank God or others, but they acknowledge what they have done to get where they are.
You know the kind of people I’m talking about? And this doesn’t just go for professional athletes or movie stars. This can be ANYBODY. The truth is, all of us at some point or another begin to believe the hype. As we get praised for something, we start to feed into what others are saying, and we believe that we are the reason for our success.
It is pride that can be our quickest downfall. Proverbs 29:23 tells us, “One’s pride will bring Him low, but He who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.” It is amazing how dependent on God we are at the beginning. When we can’t do something or we aren’t good at it, we rely on Him a whole lot.
But then as He blesses us and we start to gain a little attention, attention that we should use to point to Him, we instead begin to promote our own name. I want to warn you today that no matter where you are, whether you are just getting started, or you are in the process of popping off, remember the reason you are where you are.
You are here because of the grace of God. if you have been blessed, it is because of His grace. Do not forget the reason for your success and point the attention back to Him!
