If It’s Good Enough For Jesus

“For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” - Matthew 12:40

I’ll never forget when I got upgraded on a flight several years ago before I became the pastor of Community Bible Church. I was in basketball shorts and a tank top, had long hair down to my shoulders, and had a flat bill cap cocked to the side. This dude looked at me really smug and said, “So what do you do for a living?”

Everything in me wanted to say professional skateboarder on my way to the X games. I knew this was not going to go well. When you get up at 4:00 a.m. and you’ve got a 6:00 a.m flight, you don’t necessarily feel like talking about Jesus that early in the morning.

I sat down and said, “I’m a preacher.” His immediate response was “you actually believe that Jonah was swallowed by a whale?” I chuckled and responded, “Hey man, my name is Ed. Nice to meet you. Tell me your name.” He ignored me and asked again, “No, for real. Do you believe Jonah was swallowed by a whale?”

I smiled and responded kindly but directly, “Listen man, if it’s good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me.” He asked me what I meant by that. So I told him how Jesus said just as Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights, so must the Son of Man be in the belly of the earth. If it’s good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me.

Is what was good enough for Jesus good enough for you? As believers, sometimes we can read Scripture and come up with excuses, “Well…that was in the Old Testament…” or “Well… it was a different time in Jesus’ day,” or “My situation is just different.”

No, my friend, your situation is not different. If Scripture worked for Jesus, if the truths of the Bible were trusted by Jesus and acted upon by Jesus and they worked for Him, they work for you. Quit questioning what God is revealing to you. There is a reason He has brought it to your attention. Trust what God is showing you. If it is good enough for Jesus, it is good enough for you and me!
