Iron Sharpens Iron
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” - Proverbs 27:17
As you walk faithfully on your faith journey, obediently pursuing and chasing after the life God created you to live, you are going to need people. This isn’t just a spiritual concept. Anyone who has ever done something great in life will always refer back to “their people,” those that stuck closer than a brother.
As you go through life, you need people to walk alongside you. Why? Well for starters, because iron sharpens iron. As Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
When you have other strong believers in your life, it does several things: it motivates you, it holds you accountable, and it challenges you.
Highly successful people talk about how important it is to surround yourself with other highly successful people. Have you ever heard the phrase, “show me the five people you spend the most time with and I will show you who you are?” That is the power of those around you. When you are around strong believers, it motivates you in your spiritual walk.
It also holds you accountable. When you go through life alone where no one knows what is going on in your life, you have no accountability. You can do whatever you want, even slip off the rails and no one knows. But when you have others who know what is going on, these slips are a lot less frequent because your people will hold you accountable.
Finally, it challenges you. Iron sharpens iron. You should have godly individuals in your life who challenge you. They should challenge you to reach your ultimate potential. They should challenge you to keep going when life gets difficult. They should challenge you to look in the mirror when you are making excuses.
Having people in your life to walk alongside you is so important. Why? Because iron sharpens iron. You need people to keep you sharp as you continue to live out God’s purpose for your life.
