A Mentor
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” - Proverbs 12:15
Over the last few days, we have discussed the importance of having people in your life to help you on your spiritual journey. We have mostly been talking about peers – people that are around the same stage of life as you are and can relate to and help you with similar struggles as you all go through that stage of life together.
And this is important. But it is also important to have someone you can go to who is a little older, someone who has already walked down that road and has been where you are. Not only have they been there, but now they are on the other side.
Having a mentor can be a huge advantage that saves you a lot of trouble down the road. Instead of having to figure it out on your own, you can go to someone who has walked this road before. A mentor can tell you both where they succeeded and where they failed.
They can give you the advice that they wished they had been given. It is said that only the fool learns from his own mistakes, but a wise man learns from the mistakes of others. Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.”
Who in your life is a mentor or someone that is farther along in life and can help you with where you are now? Part of being wise is learning from others who are wiser. Having a mentor could save you years of trouble down the road.
Don’t wait to learn from your own mistakes. Sure, sometimes this is. But other times, you can save a lot of pain and heartbreak by listening to someone who has walked that road before you.
If you don’t already have one, I would strongly encourage you to find a mentor. Ask God to reveal who He wants to pour into your life!
