Growing Through Your Trial

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."- James 1:2-4

When you find yourself in the middle of a trial, the instinct is often to just survive. You grit your teeth, hang on, and wait for the storm to pass. But what if there’s more to it than just making it through? What if God wants to do something incredible in you during this challenging time? Instead of merely enduring your trial, God invites you to grow through it.

We often see trials as obstacles to overcome, but they are also opportunities for growth. It’s easy to get caught up in just trying to survive, but God has a bigger plan. He doesn’t want you to just come out of the other side of the trial the same as you went in. He wants you to emerge stronger, wiser, and more spiritually mature. The waiting, the struggle, the pain—it’s all part of God’s process of molding you into the person He created you to be.

But this growth doesn’t happen automatically. It requires a shift in perspective. Instead of asking, “How long until this is over?” start asking, “What does God want me to learn from this?” Don’t waste your waiting just enduring the difficulty, lean into it and look for the lessons God is teaching you. Every trial is an opportunity to be transformed, to deepen your faith, and to grow in character.

James tells us to “consider it pure joy” when we face trials because they produce perseverance. This perseverance is what refines us, matures us, and prepares us for what God has in store. But perseverance isn’t just about getting through the trial—it’s about letting the trial do its work in you so that you are more mature and complete, not lacking anything. It’s about becoming the person God intends you to be.

If you’re in the middle of a trial, don’t just focus on getting to the other side. Ask God what He wants to teach you. Seek His wisdom, His guidance, and His strength. Allow Him to mold you and shape you during this season. The waiting might be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be wasted. There is so much growth that can happen if you’re willing to let God work in you.

God has truly done an awesome work in your life Pastor Ed. Thank you for being so raw and honest with us! Many of us are praying for you throughout this trending series. I’m asking for you to cover my dear friends in prayer. We will need guidance and support to walk alongside a couple that are members of CBC who went to Israel with you two years ago whose son died Friday night. May God wrap his arms around this family as they walk with God through this horrible trial.

PS please continue to pray for my son Luke, as you Tony and Robin and many others have in the past two years. He also battles the same demons.
