Courageous Obedience
"Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer—Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite." - Judges 3:15
In the book of Judges, we encounter the story of King Ehud, a man known for his unusual trait: he was left-handed. But it wasn't just his physical attribute that set him apart; it was his courageous obedience to God's call that made him a hero.
Ehud lived in a time when the Israelites were oppressed by the Moabites. The people cried out to the Lord, and in response, God raised up Ehud as their deliverer. But Ehud didn't look like a typical hero. His left-handedness may have seemed like a disadvantage, but God had a unique plan.
Ehud crafted a double-edged dagger and concealed it on his right thigh, the side where most people wouldn't expect a weapon. He approached the Moabite king, Eglon, under the pretext of delivering a tribute. Once inside the king's presence, Ehud revealed his hidden weapon and struck Eglon down.
This bold act of obedience freed the Israelites from Moabite oppression, and they celebrated God's deliverance.
Ehud's story offers several lessons for us today:
1. Courage in obedience: Ehud teaches us that God often calls us to step out in courage and obedience, even when we feel ill-equipped or unconventional. Our limitations are opportunities for God to demonstrate His power.
2. Creative problem-solving: Sometimes, solving life's challenges requires creative thinking and a willingness to use unconventional methods. Ehud's left-handedness was a unique advantage that allowed him to accomplish God's purpose.
3. Deliverance through faith: Just as Ehud delivered the Israelites from their oppressor, God can deliver us from the trials and challenges we face. Our faith in God's power and guidance can lead to unexpected victories.
Think about the challenges you currently face in life. Are there situations where you feel ill-equipped or unconventional? Take inspiration from Ehud's story and remember that God can use your uniqueness and courage to bring about His deliverance. Trust in His guidance, and be open to creative solutions. As you obey God's call with courage, you may find that He uses your story to bring freedom and victory to others.
