The Gift of Repentance
"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord." - Acts 3:19
No matter who you are or how “good” you might be, we all sin from time to time. It just is what it is. It’s what comes next that is most important, and that is repentance. Acts 3:19 invites us to reflect on this gift of repentance: "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord."*
Repentance in prayer is not a chore but a profound journey of the heart's return to God. It is a recognition of our need for divine mercy and a courageous step toward restoration.
In the act of repentance, we turn away from the burdensome weight of our sins and redirect our gaze toward God. It's an intentional shift, a spiritual about-face that opens the door to forgiveness and reconciliation. As we confess our shortcomings before God, we acknowledge His sovereignty and our dependence on His grace.
One of the best biblical examples of repentance is the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15. His journey back to his father began with a realization of his waywardness. In the depth of his repentance, he arose and returned to the waiting embrace of a loving father. This narrative encapsulates the essence of repentance—a heartfelt recognition of wrongdoing followed by a sincere turning back to God.
Repentance is not merely a verbal acknowledgment but a posture of the heart. It's an honest appraisal of our actions, motivations, and attitudes. When we bring our repentance before God, we allow His transformative grace to wipe away our sins, ushering in times of refreshing and renewal.
One of the most freeing feelings is when you know that you have repented and God has forgiven you. That is what the cross is for. God has forgiven each of us, no matter how bad the sin is. Our job is to repent and turn from that sin so that it does not become a habit in our lives.
