Strained By Your Past?

“Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my father and his angels.”
- Revelation 3:4-5
Yesterday, we talked about being part of “the few” that will walk with Christ. Revelation 3:4 says, “Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy.” Jesus first spoke to the fact that there are a few, but He is speaking to the idea that a few have not soiled their clothes.

See, Sardis was known for a particular dye that they would use to change the color of clothing. And they had a tremendous export. So the staining was quite familiar because of their textile company that would change the color of their clothing, soiled. But Jesus says that white garments are synonymous with nobility, royalty, and victory.

If you are a believer, the moment you gave your life to Jesus, He clothed you in righteousness. You might be thinking, “But pastor, I’ve made so many mistakes. I feel stained by my past.” I need you to understand something. Your Savior has clothed you in righteousness, nobility, and victory.

The very next verse, Revelation 3:5 says, “I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my father and his angels.” No matter what you have done, if you are still breathing, God is not done with you yet. If you are alive, God still has a purpose and plan for you. And because of that, you are not stained by your past.

You CAN be made new. The stains on your life can be washed out. That is what Jesus died for. He doesn’t want you to walk around in shame from the stains. Instead He wants to wipe them clean. If you feel like the stains of your past have robbed you of your present, God wants to set you free today. Walk righteous now and forever, for you too can be clothed in righteousness, nobility, and victory!
