You Are What You Eat
“So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, ‘Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’ I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour.”
- Revelation 10:9-10
- Revelation 10:9-10
Yesterday, we talked about food references found throughout the Bible. There are many all through Scripture. We see another one in Revelation 10. John asks the angel to give him the little scroll and the angel says, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.”
We talked yesterday about what this passage means, and that as the Word of God is sweet, when it confronts things in our lives that are not right, it can be sour. But reading God’s Word can help us remove these things so that it is all sweet.
This is true in every area of our lives. The more time we spend with God, the more we are enriched by the things of Him, and the less time we spend “eating junk food.”
In this case, junk foods are the things of this world that the Bible speaks against; pornography, murder, stealing from others, drug and alcohol abuse, among others.
See, what you invest your time in is what will show through. Have you ever heard the phrase, “you are what you eat?” When you eat salads, lean proteins, and vegetables, your body looks great, right? But when you drink lots of sodas, eat burgers and fries 24/7, well... your body might not look as great.
The same thing is true spiritually. When your mind is lusting after someone who is not your husband or wife, when you play games where murdering others is the objective, and when you watch shows where stealing objects from places is the norm, you are spiritually unhealthy.
Instead, when you are deep into God’s Word and studying the things He wants for you, you will be much healthier. The same thing applies spiritually as it does physically — you are what you eat. What are you?
