No Rules

“Peter and the apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!” - Acts 5:29

One Sunday, I was preaching and a man in the crowd completely interrupted the service. He walked right up in the middle of the sermon to talk to the pastor. My microphone was cut off, and he goes back and gets some help. And you know what? I absolutely LOVED it.

The church I went to had “church rules” that were unspoken, one of which was don’t interrupt the pastor when he is talking. I love that our church doesn’t have church rules.

As a believer of Christ, you do not have to check your culture at the door, not in the church, but also not in your own walk with Christ. The Spirit of God can move and maneuver, and we will, like water, bend and flex to the direction of the Holy Spirit.

At our church, there really is only one rule, and that is: whatever the Spirit of God says to us, we’re going to do it. In Acts 5:29, “Peter and the apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!”

Sometimes, as human beings, we make rules that we might think are good. They give structure to others and keep them in line. But what if those rules hinder or go against what one feels led by the Spirit to do? As believers, we cannot get so caught up in the rules that we do not listen to what God is saying.

We cannot box God in. God is not bound to our human rules. He is not bound to the culture or rules created by businesses, schools, organizations, or churches. He is an all-powerful God that can do whatever He wants, however He wants. And because of this, we must be mindful of what we or others feel called to do by the Spirit.
