Do You Want God’s Heart or His Hands?

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” - Psalm 37:4

As believers, there is a question we probably do not think about enough. We know if we want to maintain a good relationship with God, like all good relationships, there must be an element of communication. We must pray to Him, we must seek Him. But the question is, what are we praying about? What are we seeking Him out for?

In other words, do you want God’s heart or do you want His hands? Meaning, do you want His heart, to know who He is, what He has in store for your life, and how much He loves you? Or, do you want His hands? Do you just want the gifts He gives, the blessings He promises, and the protection He offers?

Earlier this week, we discussed how to control the controllable. Many believers will discover something that is not controllable, and that is when they will go to God. Once they realize they can’t control it themselves, they will resort to God in hopes that He will use His power and control to give them the outcome they are hoping for.

They will continue to pray and do whatever He asks of them, as long as He gives them what they want. It becomes a transactional relationship. Then, if God does say “yes” to their request, they might thank Him, and then go their own way, not coming back until they need something again.

But this is not the relationship God wants to have with you. Psalm 37:4 says, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Many people will read this verse and get excited. They think, “God will give me my heart’s desires!” But what they miss is the first part of the verse.

The verse says, “Delight in the Lord.” The word delight means, “to take pleasure” or “to give keen enjoyment.” In other words, enjoy your time with God. Take pleasure in learning His ways and His heart. God doesn’t just want you to seek His Hands; He wants you to desire to know His heart. What do you want from God? Do you just want His hands? Or do you want His heart?
