The Spirit Is a Person
“The truth is the Good News. When you heard the truth, you put your trust in Christ. Then God marked you by giving you His Holy Spirit as a promise.” - Ephesians 1:13
As we continue to unpack the Holy Spirit, we must come to an understanding of who the Holy Spirit is. The Spirit is not an “it” but a “who.” Yesterday we looked at four verses, each from one of the gospel accounts, comparing the Holy Spirit to a dove. So what was up with the dove?
This image of a dove allows us to see the revelation of the Holy Spirit in Jesus Christ. The name Jesus, Jeshua, means salvation. The word Christ means anointed one. Anointed by whom? The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not an it. The Holy Spirit is a force. The Spirit is a person, the third person of the Trinity.
For example, at church, the podium is an “it.” The podium does not have feelings. You cannot hurt the podium because it is an object. We often say the Holy Spirit is an “it” but you cannot grieve or quench an it. When we recognize the Holy Spirit is actively at work in us, then we begin to understand the very lifestyle that Jesus has called us to live.
The Lord uses the Holy Spirit to convict us of sin, to guide into truth, to regenerate us, to reveal Christ to us, lead us, sanctify us, empower us, and teach us how to pray, among a whole slew of other things. The role the Holy Spirit plays in our life is substantial and significant.
The Spirit is a person living inside of us, and God wants us to better understand the key role this special force plays in the interactions between us and Him. We learned the other day about the power that rests inside of us that we do not even realize we have oftentimes.
That special power is the Holy Spirit, and thus the access we have to Father. To better understand the Person that is the Holy Spirit, ask God to show you all that this incredible force can do through you!
