Eyes Above The Water

“Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ He said, ‘why did you doubt?’” - Matthew 14:29-31

Yesterday, we read a good reminder that the God you serve is bigger than the problems you face. This can be calming, and even bring peace, when we look at it in the right light. The problem for many is, do they look in the right light? Or better yet, are their eyes above the water?

Matthew 14:22-36 tells the story of when Jesus walked on water. And when He did, Peter wanted to walk as well. Jesus told him to come on, and “then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ He said, ‘why did you doubt?’” (Matthew 14:29-31).

At first, Peter trusted God, but then He took his eyes off Jesus and looked down. Are you “looking down” at your current circumstances? When difficulties come your way, are you focused on the numbers on the spreadsheet or the God who provides for you? When difficulties come your way, do you look at your enemies trying to destroy you or the God who protects you?

It is easy to feel anxiety, stress, or fear when we focus on our circumstances or problems. But God has not called us to look down. He is asking you to keep your eyes above the water. Fix your eyes on the One who calms the sea!
