Willing to Drill

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” - Matthew 6:33

Over the last few days, we have been discussing a man named Mr. Yates who lived in West Texas during a not-so-great season of life. He was a man living in poverty trying to make one last-ditch effort to save his home. So he had a team drill up the land to see what was beneath.

What they hit was the ultimate jackpot – barrels on barrels on barrels of oil. Mr. Yates was instantly rich. The problem was, from the time he had purchased that land, he was sitting on that oil yet living in poverty.

Why? Because he hadn’t taken the time to drill into the good stuff. Sometimes, even as followers of Christ, we can find ourselves in a rut. We know we aren’t where we want to be, but we just can’t seem to break out and do what we know we need (and want) to do.

The problem is, we look in all the wrong places for a fix. We turn to this fad or that “expert.” And not so surprisingly, none of it works. But that’s because we are looking in the wrong place. Notice Mr. Yates didn’t get rich looking in his house or in the barn. He got rich when he was willing to drill.

Are you willing to drill? The reason you haven’t found the answer yet is because you have been looking in the wrong place. Deep down, you know where the answer is: it’s with Jesus. He has the answers for you. We joke about the “Sunday School answer” always being Jesus. But that’s because He is.

Whatever problems you have, He is the answer to them all. The journey you need to take, the way to get there, is through Him. Everything you want and are after is through Jesus. So why are you looking in all the wrong places? It’s time to start drilling.
