Guarding Against Arrogance

"For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?"- 1 Corinthians 4:7

Arrogance. It’s something that we are all turned off by, but rarely see in ourselves. It is a subtle yet dangerous trap that we must guard against as followers of Christ. It creeps in quietly, whispering lies of self-sufficiency and superiority, leading us to believe that our gifts and abilities are solely our own doing. But the truth is, every good gift we have comes from God.

Think about the talents and abilities you possess. Whether it’s a gift for music, art, leadership, or communication, these abilities are not of your own making—they are gifts from God, given to you for His purposes. Yet, how often do we boast about our own achievements, forgetting that every good thing we have comes from Him?

Arrogance blinds us to the reality of our dependence on God. It causes us to trust in our own strength and wisdom rather than relying on His guidance and provision. But the moment we start to believe that we are self-made individuals, we lose sight of the truth that we are utterly dependent on God for everything.

So, how do we guard against arrogance in our lives? It starts with humility—the recognition that every good thing we have is a gift from God. It’s about acknowledging our dependence on Him and giving Him the glory for the talents and abilities He has bestowed upon us.

When we embrace humility, we cultivate a heart of gratitude—a heart that recognizes the source of every blessing and rejoices in the goodness of our Heavenly Father. Instead of boasting about our own accomplishments, we boast in the Lord, acknowledging His faithfulness and goodness in our lives.

Embrace Paul’s warning against arrogance, remembering the words of 1 Corinthians 4:7: "What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?" May we humbly recognize that every gift and ability we possess is a gracious gift from God, and may we use them to glorify Him and advance His kingdom here on earth.
