Without Expectation
"Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." - Matthew 20:28
In our society, it's so common to approach relationships and opportunities with a mindset of exchange. We often find ourselves helping others with an unspoken expectation of receiving something in return, whether it’s a favor, acknowledgment, or even just a sense of personal satisfaction. But when we look at the example of Jesus, we see a radically different approach to service.
Jesus came to serve, not to be served. He washed the feet of His disciples, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ultimately gave His life for us, expecting nothing in return. His actions were driven purely by love and compassion, not by what He could gain.
Reflect on your own life. How often do you help others with an expectation of something in return? It’s natural to want to feel appreciated and valued, but true service, the kind that reflects the heart of Jesus, is given freely and without strings attached. It’s serving a meal to a neighbor in need without waiting for a thank you. It’s lending a listening ear to a friend without expecting them to do the same for you someday. It’s giving your time, resources, and energy simply because someone else needs it.
Serving others without expecting anything in return can be challenging. It requires us to shift our focus from ourselves to others. But the reward is a deeper connection with God and a greater understanding of His love for us. When we serve selflessly, we become more like Jesus and show His love to the world in a tangible way.
Challenge yourself to serve without looking for a return. Find opportunities to bless others quietly and humbly. Let your actions speak of God’s unconditional love. As you do, you’ll discover the joy and fulfillment that comes from living a life of true service. Remember, it’s not about what you can get, but what you can give. In serving others selflessly, you will find yourself growing closer to the heart of God.
