Delight in the Lord

"Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart." - Psalm 37:4

Yesterday, we discussed the idea that God wants to give us the desires of our hearts. But we have to be careful we don’t focus only on the promise that God will give us these desires. We must not overlook the first part of the verse: "Delight yourself in the Lord."

Before God fulfills our deepest desires, He calls us to find our joy and satisfaction in Him. This isn’t about treating God like a genie who grants our wishes but about cultivating a genuine relationship with Him.

To delight in the Lord means to take great pleasure in His presence, to find joy in who He is, and to seek Him with all your heart. It’s about spending time in prayer, worship, and reading His Word, allowing His love and truth to fill your life. When you delight in God, you prioritize your relationship with Him above all else, recognizing that He is the source of true happiness and fulfillment.

God desires a real relationship with you, one where you come to Him not just for what He can give but for who He is. Imagine a friendship where the only time you talked to the other person was when you needed something. That wouldn’t be a very deep or meaningful relationship. In the same way, God wants more than just to grant your requests; He wants to walk with you daily, to share in your joys and sorrows, and to be the center of your life.

As you delight in the Lord, something beautiful happens. Your desires start to align with His will. The more you know Him, the more your heart is transformed to reflect His heart. Your priorities shift, and what you long for begins to resonate with God’s plans for you. This doesn’t mean you lose your individuality or passions; rather, your desires are refined and elevated to match the goodness and greatness of God’s purposes.

Take time each day to delight in God. Set aside moments to praise Him for His goodness, to thank Him for His blessings, and to seek His guidance. Immerse yourself in His Word and let His truth shape your thoughts and actions. In these moments, you’ll discover that God’s presence is the greatest gift of all.
