A God of Second Chances
“Then Peter came up and said to Him, ‘Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.’” - Matthew 18:21-22
As we continue to look at the story of Jonah, we must consider something very important. But before we talk about that, let’s look at what we do already know. We know Jonah did not listen to God. We know Jonah ran from God (in the opposite direction). We know Jonah bought a ticket to get on a boat (because sin costs). We know while at sea, Jonah got caught in a storm, was thrown overboard, and swallowed by a big fish.
So what happened once Jonah was in the fish? He was eaten, right? Actually, no. Jonah was in the mouth of the fish for three days and three nights. Ironically enough, the fish actually swam in the direction of Nineveh. Crazy how that works right?
We serve a God of second chances. If you are reading this today, it is no coincidence. Just like it was not a coincidence that Jonah was swallowed by a fish. Just like it was no coincidence that the fish swam in the direction of where God originally wanted Jonah to go. The same God that orchestrated the events in Jonah’s life is the same God orchestrating the events in your life.
He is a God of second chances. He wants you to know today, just like He gave Jonah another chance after he blatantly ran in the opposite direction, He is ready to give you a second chance. You say, “Pastor, He’s already given me a second chance, I blew that one too.”
Matthew 18:21-22 says, “Then Peter came up and said to Him, ‘Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.’”
You can’t outrun the grace of Jesus Christ. You cannot “mess up” enough times that He won’t forgive you. He is a God of second, third, fourth, and 500 chances. He will never give up on you! Praise the God you serve and thank Him for His infinite grace!
