Idolatry, Corruption, and False Prophets

“Our enemies have no reason to gloat over us. We have fallen, but we will rise again. We are in darkness now, but the Lord will give us light.” - Micah 7:8

Yesterday, we mentioned that the people of Israel, God’s chosen people, were committing sins without considering the consequences. This is seen in the book of Micah. There were three specific types of sins they were regularly committing; idolatry, corruption, and false prophecy.

Isn’t it amazing that the Bible records the struggles of people thousands of years ago, and they are the same struggles we have today? These are all three types of sins we would be wise to avoid. Let’s take a look at each one now.

Idolatry. It is one of the Ten Commandments. Exodus 20:3 puts it very simply, “You shall have no other gods before me.” Now, this does not just mean physical gods. You might be saying, “Pastor I don’t worship any statues or images.” And that is great. But do you prioritize the ball game over the church? Do you spend more time in prayer or on your phone? I don’t say these things to put you on a guilt trip. The Lord says, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Corruption. 2 Peter 2:19 says, “They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.” Are you enslaved? Are you fighting an addiction or bad habit that you just can’t seem to overcome? If so, you have probably noticed all the different areas of your life it is affecting.

False Prophecy. 1 John 4:1 says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone into the world.” Are you easily influenced? Do you find yourself taking everyone’s word for everything? In this day and age, with so much information available, be careful. Do not be tricked by the wrong sources.

Idolatry, corruption, and false prophets. The same sins Micah witnessed from God’s people then are the same sins we struggle with now. If any of these sins are things that you feel convicted of, pray to your Heavenly Father. Understand the consequences of your sin. Repent and ask for forgiveness. And let Him lead you into the light!
