Blameless
“They kept demanding an answer, so He stood up again and said, ‘All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” - John 8:7
When is the last time you got mad at someone? They messed up big time and you just cannot seem to forget about it. You were really counting on them and needed them to come through, and they just completely blew it.
It could be a business partner that was helping you launch a new product, and they completely screwed up their end right before you had to pitch your big idea. It could be a teammate that turned the ball over and cost your team the game. It could be a friend who you trusted with a really big secret, and they told the one person you really needed not to know.
No matter what it is, you just can’t let it go. You can’t forget about it. And it has damaged your relationship with them for quite some time. You say, “Pastor, you don’t understand. It’s frustrating. I was really counting on them, and they completely blew it. And it messed things up for ME.”
I do get it. I understand. There have been people I have counted on too who also didn’t come through. But you know what? I’ve also been that person who hasn’t come through. And so have you. None of us are without fault. None of us are blameless.
John 8:7 says, “They kept demanding an answer, so He stood up again and said, ‘All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”
This verse was Jesus’ response to the people as they wanted to stone a young woman when she had screwed up. But Jesus turned the tables back to their own mistakes. We all make mistakes. We are all at fault at some point or another.
This is not to excuse what the person in your life has done. They may really have screwed up. But at some point, you have or will too. If you are struggling to forgive someone, just think back to a time when you let someone else down and remember how they felt. Remember how badly you wanted them to forgive you?
It’s time to forgive. Not because they deserve it. But because your Father has forgiven you!
