It Takes a Village
“For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ that would not make it any less a part of the body.” - 1 Corinthians 12:14-15
Did you know that you cannot play a basketball game with one person? You might be saying, “Of course you can’t pastor, duh! You would get killed playing 5 on 1.” But that’s not what I’m saying. I am saying you can’t legally play 5 on 1.
When one team scores, the other team has to pass the ball in, and they need at least 2 players to do that. They need one to pass it and one to catch and bring the ball up the court. I say this because basketball is often the team sport that gets most individualized.
We hear things like, “he beat them all by himself,” or “he outscored the other team on his own.” And that might be true. Occasionally, at lower levels, one player can outscore the other team. But they still needed someone to pass the ball in to them. They still needed teammates to defend and help force missed shots.
Basketball is not an individual game. The game isn’t played 1 on 1. It is played 5 on 5. And so, you need 5 players. There is a phrase that says, “it takes a village,” meaning, one person can’t do it on their own.
That isn’t just true in basketball, it’s true in life. 1 Corinthians 12:14-15 says, “For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ that would not make it any less a part of the body.”
As God calls you to live according to His purpose, you will need others. No one can accomplish His purpose all on their own. We need others to use their spiritual gifts, gifts that are different from ours. When we all come together, we can do something great.
But it takes a village. You can’t do it alone!
