Keep Calm and Don't Blow Up: The Wisdom of Being Slow to Anger

"My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry" - James 1:19

Have you ever found yourself getting really angry about something and then later on realizing that you overreacted? Or have you been in a situation where someone pushed your buttons and you just lost it? I know I have. But as believers, we need to remember that being quick to become angry doesn't bring glory to God, and it doesn't bring peace to our lives.

In James 1:19, we are called to be slow to become angry. Why is this important? Because anger often leads us to say or do things that we regret later. It can damage relationships, hurt people's feelings, and even get us into trouble. But when we are slow to become angry, we can approach situations with a clear mind and a level head. We can think about our response and make sure that it's the right one.

So, what does wisdom look like when it comes to anger? First, it means recognizing that not everything is worth getting angry about. Sometimes we get angry over things that really don't matter in the grand scheme of things. We need to learn to let those things go and focus on what's truly important.

Second, wisdom means taking a step back and asking yourself why you're getting angry. Is it because someone hurt your pride? Is it because you're feeling frustrated or overwhelmed? By understanding the root of your anger, you can address it in a healthy way.

Finally, wisdom means taking control of your emotions instead of letting them control you. When you feel anger rising up in you, take a deep breath and count to ten. Pray and ask God to give you the strength to keep your cool. Remember that your words and actions have consequences, and you want to make sure they are positive ones.

In conclusion, being slow to become angry is not always easy, but it is a sign of wisdom and maturity. Let's strive to keep our emotions in check, focus on what really matters, and trust God to help us handle the challenges we face. Remember, we have the power to choose how we react, so let's choose wisely.
